Along with high quality hiking boots, Columbia also carries a wide range of footwear like winter boots, trail runners, and casual shoes for men, women, and kids. They have also developed some innovative technology for most of their styles of footwear, which I will touch on later.

Columbia Sportswear History

For over 70 years Columbia Sportswear Company has been based in Portland Oregon, where it has remained a family business. Originally purchased by Chairman Gert Boyle’s parents in the late 1930’s when it was a small hat company, which they named Columbia Hat Company. In honor of their new found freedom it’s name was inspired by the river of their new home.

Many years later Gert took over the family business after her husbands death, and has been running the show for over 40 years. Now, the current longtime CEO and president is her son Tim Boyle. As a result of their current leadership Columbia has grown into a unique global sportswear company, that is dedicated to making excellent footwear and apparel.

  1. So I work at Outward Bound (probably spend about 180 days in the woods every year) and I absolutely love Columbia as a company. There appears to be a stigma around them sometimes in the outdoor community, regarding them as “cheap”, but frankly I’ve never had a problem with anything that I’ve purchased from them. Working in the outdoors doesn’t mean you get paid much, so on a budget this is a no brainer for me. In fact, some of my friends swear that their Columbia gear holds up even better than some of the higher-end companies like Patagonia or Arc’Teryx. Thanks for the info, I’m gonna give one of these boots a try!
